The capital of Colorado is Denver, which also is the largest city. It boosts of days and days, 300 to be exact, of wonderful, warm sunshine. This is far more than San Diego and Miami Beach combined. Spanish explorers were the first to visit the state of Colorado back in the 1500's. A guy by the name of Juan de Ulibarri claimed it in 1706. The U.S. obtained it as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and became a state in 1876. The name "Colorado" was selected much later from the Spanish word meaning "colored red".
Colorado is known for it's diverse weather and outdoor activities. It has the highest elevation of any state and, with the Rocky Mountains, are a 1000 peaks over 10,000 ft. 54 above 14,000 ft. You will find the famous Pikes Peak here too. Once known for enriched mining and agricultural, Colorado's production now lies in service and manufacturing. This includes food products, along with printing, publishing, and transportation. The crops that are primary here in Colorado is corn, wheat, and hay.
But nothing can take away from the scenery in this beautiful state of Colorado. There is world class skiing, of course the Rocky Mountains, Curecanti National Recreation Area, Mesa Verde National Park, the Great Sand Dunes and Dinosaur National Monuments, Colorado National Monument, and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument.
Lets talk some more about the wonderful climate that makes Colorado so popular. It can be cool and dry compared to the rest of the country. Part of the state, depending on the elevation, can be very snowy, or quite warm. The valleys, and there are lots of them, will be warmer. Generally speaking, the lower the spot, the higher the temp, the higher the spot, well, you know, the lower the temp. Colorado is well known for its severe weather formations, particularly in the winter. It has been known to get dumped with not just inches but feet of snow. It can bring everything to a stand still for days on end. The summer can bring severe thunderstorms and damaging hail. But on the bright side, the remaining days are lovely and that is why people find this a wonderful place to live.
